Impressions From Whisky Jewbilee 2016

Whisky Jewbilee 2016The boys of Jewish Whisky Company put on an amazing grand tasting event last week. Studio 450 has been the Whisky Jewbilee venue for the past three years and it’s a clean, airy and picturesque venue. In addition to 250+ whiskies, they also had cigars and a full kosher buffet. I was thoroughly impressed by the buffet this year. The pastrami, seared ahi tuna and poke were absolutely delicious. If you’ve never attended Whisky Jewbilee, I highly advise that you do in 2017. Look to get your tickets early since the 2016 event sold out a week or two ahead of the event. This is one of the best grand tasting events in NYC because of it’s intimacy. Josh, Jason and Seth, founders of Jewish Whisky Company, have fine tuned the minuscule details of a grand whisky tasting.

Favorite Whiskies From the Event

(in no particular order)
Arran 15 sherry single cask, cask strength (Martin Scott exclusive)
Arran 18
Balvenie 25
GlenDronach hand filled for the Jewbilee
Port Dundas 17
Springbank Festival 2016 9 year
Tomintoul 37

My favorite booth at the event was the Scotch Whisky Auctions. They had a bunch of special/rare bottlings as well as a few that were hand filled for Jewbilee. I really enjoyed the GlenDronach that they had on hand – it was luscious and rich with flavor. Their Springbank Festival 2016 bottling was a treat and is something that one can only get at the distillery – there are only 276 bottles worldwide. I really enjoyed the newest Arran expressions – the 18 and 15 single cask. The 15 year is a Martin Scott exclusive and aged completely in a sherry hogshead and bottled at cask strength. It blew me out of the water and I’ll be getting my hands on a sample soon for an official review.

Following tradition, the Jewish Whisky Company launched a special festival bottling for the event. This year it was a single barrel from Wild Turkey. It’s a 9 year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Jewish Whisky Company is the first company to independently bottle a single barrel of Wild Turkey and still use their proprietary brand name. The Wild Turkey is bottled at a natural cask strength of 60.7% ABV. All in all, the event was a booming success. I can’t wait to come back next next year.
